Jambi at a Glance

Jambi as other provinces in Sumatera dominated by Malay people. Mixed culture between local Malay and Islam colorize daily life and principle rules in Jambi which we can find same things all throughout Sumatera, from Aceh in northern to Lampung in southern, and from Sumatera Barat in western to Bangka Belitung in eastern. Even tough Jambi have Islam as main role model but since religion education system found their obstacles to touch what mores playing in the social order, Jambinese values sometimes have paradox with Islam cultures. The influence of Hinduism and Buddhism remain in Jambinese daily behavior, like heresy, you may find often things linked to mystical stuff. Among 9 regencies and 2 cities, there is only Jambi City that have heterogeneous society while other regencies have Malay dominant mixed with local sub-ethnic dialects and cultures. In a few sub-districts of each regency, some sub-ethnics seem to be majority, usually Javanese and Buginese. Javanese are playing their majority in sub-district which plotted by central government as transmigration program area and Buginese normally form their communities in coastal area. Other sub-ethnics with considerable population are Sundanese and Bataknese. And another sub-ethnic which have major influence in Jambi is Kerincinese. Chinese ethnic normally are living in capital of a regency while many of Indian and Tamil descents can be found in capital of Sarolangun Regency and Merangin Regency.

Government servants (PNS)

Livelihood in Jambi are divided into mainly farming, freshwater and marine fisheries, and plantations. Dutch colonial left rubber plantation system that being continued by local people today. Trading and commerce are usually acted by Chinese and Indian descents and mainly found in the capital of each regencies. Higher educated people of Jambinese normally are trying to apply to be civil and government servants (PNS). Other industries that have established in Jambi were pulp and paper, rubber processing, and livestock. Since palm oil industry have increased in Indonesia, Jambi have been being counted as good area for palm plantations. Climate and social structure help palm industry companies to do land clearing for plantation. In a few sub-districts this situation triggered conflicts between the companies with local farmers caused by central government and provincial government overlapping policies, in some cases it causes casualties on local farmers.

Census 2010 noted that most of people in age of 6-15 years old normally attending elementary and first high school which 50% of them continued to advanced high school (age at 16-18 years old). People who extent to higher level education like university or college is unknown. Jambi have one state university, one state Islamic academic, one private university, and dozens of private academics, most of them are located in Jambi City. In Jambi, private academics with majoring in midwifery and nursing are dominant since Jambi needed public health personnel in significant amount.

For some economic parameters Jambi have economic growth above national growth rates, it also happened on population growth. This prevailing condition was result of set of local regulations made by province government that at a time was led by a business minded governor, Zulkifli Nurdin. The former governor was the only one governor in Indonesia who had established a province representative and trade office outside Indonesia namely in Singapore. He also launched a policy to open Jambi for more flight connections from twice daily to be more than 12 flights daily for local and inter province flights.
